News & Updates:

4/10/2013

Here is the 24th edition of what we do with our summer and we hope the info provided will entice you to come on out and join us. Biking, camping, boating, whatever the activity… we like to enjoy the short summer being active and social and all the good things that come through being part of a group as special as we all are. Thanks for joining us the past 23 years we look forward to the new season~  We have enjoyed looking through pictures from the previous years and recapturing many fun times.

For the first time in 2012 we had a group participate in the RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa).  It was hot, dry and many miles each day but everyone completed their goals and have great stories to share about the event.  Same is true of TRAM, the gals and Ron Bole were successful and had great fun. Golfing, Triathlon, Pedal Pub fun were a few of the other events enjoyed...

New grandchildren have blessed some of our folks; Lissick’s, Jenner’s, and Laurie Lehman have new granddaughters an Rick Dittel has a new grandson.

This year we are planning a bike trip out west to Idaho and other areas. Look for more information to come on the trip and remember that we will be limited on the number of participants.

Keep us posted on someone who may need a little boost of sunshine as we like to share it always but especially when it is most needed.

Happy trails to you… SnF Event Coordinator

The annual ski trip for SnF this year to Giants Ridge is cancelled.

Think snow!!!!!!

SnF trip to Bayfield, WI Wed August 22nd to Sun 26th, 2012

11/22/2011

Kayaking
SnF will go on a guided day Sea kayaking paddle on Lake Superior to the Sea Caves on Friday Aug 24th with outfitter ‘Living Adventure’.  Trip is limited to 12 people using tandem kayaks.  If serious about going, make your own reservations NOW, 866-779-9503 tell them you’re with the group SnF.  (The Sampson’s & D/M Carlsen already reserved for the 8am trip).

A second trip can be added leaving at a different time. Trip price is $99.adult + tax.  It includes a tandem kayak, all gear, guides, instructions, and lunch. See PDF attachment for ALL the details, pre pay required. http://www.livingadventure.com/

Camping
SnF will be staying at ‘Apostles Islands Area Campgrounds’, ½ mile south of BF. RV, tent sites and 2 camper cabins are available.

Make your own reservations beginning 1/1/12 by check and US mail.  See website for the registration form. We’ve stayed here twice. The owner is VERY picky and has strict rules about everything. It is very clean, has many shady sites and is really convenient to everything. It is not on the lake.  A traditional SnF potluck and campfire on Sat. may NOT be possible here. Also Sat. eve we may be going to the Big Top live show. http://www.apostleislandsareacampground.com/

Other area attractions and activities but are not planned by us:
Biking

Around the challenging, hilly orchards near BF. http://bayfield.org/land_activities_bicycling.php

OR on Madeline Island where it’s easy and level.  http://madelineisland.com/

Music/performances:

Live musicians/performances are at the ‘Big Top Chautauqua’, an intimate 900-seat, all-canvas, state-of-the-art tent theater.  A free RT bus shuttle is available from many area businesses including the campground where we are staying.  We love this venue and will likely attend the evening show Sat the 25th.  See website for details and schedules. http://www.bigtop.org/

Golfing

Even if you don’t golf, this is worth a stop and cold beverage on the deck at the very scenic ‘Apostle Highlands Golf course’.

Hiking

http://bayfield.org/land_activities_hiking.php

How far away is Bayfield? Just far enough. Far enough to let you escape from strip malls. And drive-thru meals. And 3pm budget meetings. And all the other hassles, hype and "have-to's" of everyday life. Here, stress and schedules just sort of drift away on the sun-kissed waves of Lake Superior. And you can relax and re-charge in one of the most beautiful natural settings on Earth, let alone the Midwest. Try kayaking out to our famous water-sculpted sea caves. Catch the ferry over to Madeline Island or take a boat tour of the historic lighthouses on the other Apostle Islands. Hike out into the sunny berry fields and apple orchards to pick your own sweet, juicy bounty. Or just hunker down with a good book and savor the wide, soul-restoring vistas of the Big Lake. In Bayfield, Wisconsin, you'll discover a million things you'll want to do. And not one you have to do. http://bayfield.org/

There are many other great things to do in this area to numerous to mention them all.   Hope you join us,

Marty & Doreen Sampson

SnF MS TRAM VOLUNTER INFO

5/30/2011

For several years now SnF has participated in the MS TRAM, the ride across MN. It is fun to do this type of ride with special friends all coming together for a common good. This event like all rides is a great opportunity to meet new friends as well. In the past I volunteered and worked with Marge at rest stop 4. It is a truly WONDERFUL experience and lots of fun working with her. Below is the information that applies to this year’s TRAM Rest Stop 4 and Marge is wondering if anyone in our group would be interested in volunteering ..........

Please contact Marge! Riders like myself, look forward to seeing your smiling faces at Rest Stop 4!!!!!
Mary

This year there are only Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday that have 4 rest stops.
Locations are:
Monday:
Rice Lake Church in Cleremont, Mn.
Tuesday: United Methodist in Lansing, Mn.
Wednesday: Preston Trailhead

Basically it is to set up the tables, tents. Make sandwiches, stock the treats given out. Make the gator aid and then take it all down. Typically they can eat a peanut butter sandwich or bring their own food. They get a volunteer t-shirt and we make it as much fun as we can. Golden Gear this year will not be at my rest stop-so we don't have that extra set up.

Depending on how this works out, they can drive down for one day or camp with the group for the entire three days. I am staying all week, even though I won't be working on Thursday. I will help on Friday. Maybe just greeting people as they ride in.

Let me know if you get anyone. If they have not volunteered for MS before, we need to get them registered. They can send a note to me with name/address/phone/email and I will take care of that.
Thanks
Margaret

They do need help probably at the finish line for Friday if anyone wants to help the last day.
